US Ambassador: Corruption is
Number One Problem in
Bulgaria March 26, 2009,
Thursday
The US
Ambassador to Bulgaria, Nancy McEldowney, has stated that corruption
and organized crime are the most serious problems that Bulgaria
faces.
McEldowney said that during her visit to
Washington last week she talked to the new US administration about
the "very important" problem of the global economic crisis and also
about the US partnership with Bulgaria.
McEldowney was speaking in an interview on bTV
Thursday. She went on to say that the US is a committed friend of
Bulgaria and that they will talk truthfully about the problems they
see in Bulgaria.
Ambassador McEldowney said that one of the
problems she has noticed is the vote buying issue, stating that the
vote of one citizen is an instrument that can decide the future of
the country.
She added that "corruption is a problem that
every country faces. Bulgaria did not invent corruption. But
corruption and organized crime are the biggest problems in your
country, everyone including the politicians have to fight against
it."
McEldowney refused to be drawn into the debate
on who will be the next NATO Secretary General or whether the US
would be supporting Bulgaria's candidate Solomon Passy, by saying
that all the candidates are of a high pedigree.

Ireland President
McAleese: Irish Expats Bring Us Together March 25, 2009, Wednesday
Bulgaria's
leaders, President Parvanov and PM Stanishev, welcomed the President
of Ireland, Mary McAleese, to Sofia Wednesday.
"The large number of Irish who visit
Bulgaria are the natural bridge between our two countries because
the contact between people is the most important thing, and it has
been growing steadily in the recent years", President McAleese said
during her meeting with Stanishev.
The Prime Minister declared in turn that
Bulgaria was learning from Ireland's experience, especially in the
field of the absorption of EU funds.
President McAleese and PM Stanishev
discussed the measures the countries are undertaking in order to
tackle global financial crisis effects agreeing these should include
a boost of European-wide and international
partnership.
Both leaders were positive that energy
security and the diversification of the energy sources should be a
top priority for the EU.
Bulgaria's Prime Minister pointed out
that the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty, which the Irish voters
rejected in a June 2008 referendum, was extremely important for the
functioning of the EU institution.
President McAleese declined to predict
whether a second referendum in Ireland would pass the Lisbon Reform
Treaty but thanked Bulgaria and the EU as a whole for allaying the
misgivings of the Irish people over the Treaty.
On Thursday, Ireland's President will
open a seminar entitled "Bulgaria and Ireland - European Partners"
at Sofia University, and she will complete her visit to Bulgaria by
travelling to the southern city of Plovdiv, and the Bachkovo
Monastery.
Paradoxically, President McAleese's visit
to Sofia ends just before the Ireland-Bulgaria World Cup 2010
football qualifier taking place on Saturday.

FT: Bulgaria Less
Dramatic amidst Eastern Rumbles
March 26, 2009,
Thursday
"The
demise of three east European governments in six weeks suggests the
region faces instability at a time when strong governments are
needed," the Financial Times wrote, commenting on the political
situation in Eastern Europe.
It points out that Bulgaria may see turmoil,
though on a less dramatic scale, with the Socialist administration
facing likely defeat in parliamentary elections this summer because
of a poor anti-corruption record and economic
distress.
"With the moderate centre-right groupings weak,
the likely election winner is GERB, the anti-corruption party led by
Sofia mayor Boyko Borisov," the Financial Times
forecasts.
According to the article the demise of the
Czech government had little to do with the economy and everything to
do with political weakness. Mirek Topolanek, the centre-right prime
minister, had a majority of just one in the 200-seat parliament. He
survived four no-confidence votes before falling to a fifth, called
by the Social Democrat opposition over a vote-buying
scandal.
Hungary and Latvia are more worrying, since
they both entered the global crisis with home-grown economic
difficulties, have needed EU/International Monetary Fund rescues and
may face deep recessions.
